Temple Preparations For A Religious Holiday
Bali, Indonesia
This sign welcomed us as we came to the end of a country road on a day devoted to exploring some of the temples of Bali.
Pura Luhur Besi Kalung is one of my favorite Balinese temples. It lies in the countryside and is surrounded by trees and rise fields. A Pura is a Balinese Hindu temple. Hinduism is the predominant religion on the island of Bali, unlike most of Indonesia which is mostly Muslim. Many, many puras exist in Bali, the large temples and small family temples in most back yards, giving Bali the name of "The Island of a Thousand Puras". In my article post The Temples of Bali I go into details of the temples and how they are make up. Today I want to share how the members of a temple prepare the temple for a special religious holiday.
Pura's are not like our churches, most are open and sit out of doors and are used on religious occasions, not every day. When I have visited in the past it has been quiet, no activity, except may be a workman repairing an alter or clearing the grounds. But this day it was filled with activity, decorations were being carried in, men were building and covering alters, women were unloading baskets of beautiful decorations, many handmade. It was a beehive of activity.
